The Omakau branch of the W.D.F.U. met on September 9, Mrs Charles presiding. Hostesses were Mrs Scorgie and Miss Jess Clouston. Mrs Denton Leech, a member of the National Council of Women, gave an educational address on the League of Nations,_ explaining its significance and its objects, and at the close of the meeting the Omakau branch collectively became a member of the League of Nations Union.
The Herbert branch held a successful progressive euchre and dance in the hall recently. The ladies’ prize was won by Mrs A. Campbell and the men’s by Mr A. Hughes. Special prizes for most points in the second half were won by Mrs A. Campbell and Mr A. Hughes. Extras were played by Mrs G. Anderson. Mrs E, Hill, Miss L. Finlayson, and Mr Headsley. Mr J. Campbell carried out the duties of M.C.
The September meeting of the West Taieri branch was presided oyer by Mrs W. Heid. An account of Country Girls’ Week was given by Misses M. Grant and P. Irving. Misses Pickard and Smith then gave e demonstration on floral work, and showed members how to make wreaths, posies, bouquets, etc. The competition results were; Sultana cake—Mrs Cameron 1, Mrs A. Grant 2. Mrs W. Brookes 3; polyanthus —Mrs P. Bathgate 1, Mrs J. Bathgate 2, Mrs A. Free 3.
* * * The Clydevale branch met on September 10. Miss May presiding. Ihe roll call was “A biscuit recipe. The competition—“ Best bloom —resulted in Miss M. Wilson gaining most points. Miss-Molly Paisley gave a report on Country Girls’ Week. The afternoon took the form of a social in honour of Mrs Wynne Macfarlane. who was recently married. The president presented Mrs Macfarlane with a gift, and welcomed her back to the branch. Mrs Macfarlane suitably replied. A game, “Musical parcel”—was won by Miss M. Wilson, and during the afternoon items were rendered by Mrs Thompson and Miss M. Wilson. The hostesses were Mrs Jones and Mrs Geddis.
V V * The Tuapeka West branch met on Saturday. The roll call was “A hot tea dish.” During the social hour, Mrs Rollitt entertained with a description of a holiday she had spent at Lake Wanaka. The competition. “ Something new from something old.” resulted as follows:—Mrs Belcher and Miss R. Young (equal) 1, Mrs G. Young 3, Mrs Fahey 4. The hostesses were Mrs Fahey and Miss E. Young.
