ST. KILDA BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL The fortnightly meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council was held last night and was attended by Crs G. Glue, W. J. Davicjson, J. H. Hinton, W. Lovell, R. S. Brent, T, D. B. Roy, N, D. Anderson, J. Cherry, J. Carman and W. Rutherford. The Deputy Mayor, Cr Glue, presided, the Mayor (Mr J, J. Marlow) being absent from the city. CORRESPONDENCE The secretary of the St. Kilda Unemployed Cricket Club wrote asking that the club be allotted a wicket on Culling Park for the forthcoming season.—Referred to the Reserves Committee. The chief surveyor of the Department of Lands and Survey wrote asking the council to undertake as soon as possible a standard survey of the streets within the borough. The city of Dunedin was prosecuting a survey, and the other main cities and boroughs had undertaken surveys. In the case of St. Kilda 17 J miles of streets would be involved, at a cost of approximately £6O per mile. Two-fifths of the cost of this survey would be payable by the St. Kilda Council, an amount of £426. The survey would probably extend over tWo years.—The matter was held over until next meeting. REPORTS The borough sanitary and motor inspector (Mr D. Mann) reported that he had carried out the usual traffic duties. Various licences had been issued and buildings inspected. —The matter of bicycles being ridden on the footpaths was discussed, and it was decided that the practice should be brought to the notice of the police.—The inspector’s report was adopted. The borough foreman (Mr J. C. Clyma) reported that patching streets, sweeping channels, and reconstruction work in Moreau street had been carried out, and all the plant overhauled and repaired.— Adopted. The plumber (Mr A. N. Sheppard) reported that during the past fortnight he had repaired 18 water bursts and carried out general work.—Adopted. The Finance Committee’s report was also adopted, and accounts amounting to £loo9 19s lOd were passed for payment. It was reported that the water consumption for the last two weeks totalled 3,884.000 gallons, at a cost of £97 2s. The cost for the previous fortnight was £93 11s 6d.
