DEFENCE OF AUSTRALIA
NEW WARSHIP TO BE BUILT OTHER PROPOSALS OUTLINED CANBERRA, Sept. 12. In announcing the Government’s defence programme the Minister of Defence (Sir Archibald Parkhill) said it included a new warship to be built in Australia. The armaments in the cruisers Australia and Canberra were to be modernised. The aircraft first-line strength would be 194 planes, of which 96 would be in service this year. The permanent army would number 2300 and the militia almost certainly 35,000. There would be anti-gas training and provision of equipment.
