PROTEST STRIKE
SATURDAY WORK RESENTED EMPLOYEES OF FERTILISER WORKS (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 13. The fertiliser workers employed at the works of Kempthorne, Prosser, at Westfield, absented themselves from work yesterday, apparently because they objected to Saturday work. Although the management tried to get in touch with the union officials, it was unable to ascertain officially whether the action of the men was intended to be confined to Saturday or whether the protest strike is to continue. Recently the Arbitration Court made an order permitting the industry to work on Saturdays with a 40-hour week. _ CALLIOPE DOCK WORKERS SHORTER HOURS SOUGHT (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept 13. Arising from the action of the 140 civilian workers who did not arrive at work at the Calliope Dock this morning as a protest against no reduction in the hours for the working week, Commander Tinley, officer in charge of the naval base, is conferring in private with the Minister of Marine (Mr P. Fraser), who arrived this morning. It is understood that the conversations are concerned with the future policy regarding the attitude adopted by the men on the last two Saturdays.
