ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
FALL INTO HARBOUR ELDERLY MAN SUCCUMBS (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 13. Brought to land in a comatose condition after having been struggling in the harbour for a short time near Aotea quay about 5 p.m. yesterday, Michael Joseph Curran, 69 years of age; an inmate of Ohiro Home, died without regaining consciousness. A single man, he was a native of Ireland, hut had been in New Zealand about 15 years. He is believed to have fallen over Aotea quay. His head bore injuries consistent with his having struck part of the wharf in the fall. Artificial respiration was applied, but without avail. A young man named James Rewi Dunne, a member pf the crew of H.M.S. Achilles, stripped, and, despite the cold,, dived into the harbour, bringing Curran to the wharf. ' COLLISION WITH TRAMCAR CYCLIST FATALLY INJURED (Per United Press Association) WANGANUI, Sept. 13. As the result of injuries received when his cycle collided with a tram at the intersection of Heads road and Liffiton street yesterday morning Frederi<& James Penfold, aged 48 years, a married man, of Carlton avenue, Gonville, died in the Wanganui Hospital. Penfold received a fractured skull, and was in a serious condition when admitted to the hospital. GREYMOUTH CITIZEN’S DEATH BODY FOUND ON BEACH (Per United Press Association) i GREYMOUTH, Sept. 13. A body found on the sea beach, nine miles from the Westport-Grevmouth Coastal road this afternoon was identified as that of Arthur Naylor, aged 62 deputy official secretary at Greymouth. and also secretary of thp Justices of the Peace Association. The deceased was a widower, and had been missing since last Monday evening, when he disappeared from his place of residence without leaving any explanation.' FOUND ’DEAD An elderly man. Robert Garrick who lived alone at 35 Stanley street. MornInpton, was found dead at his residence on Friday afternoon. He was discovered lying fully dressed, on the floor of a room by a lad who had been sent in by a neighbour to see if Mr Garrick was well. Medical examination ■ showed that death had occui red about 24 hours previously. The deceased, who was 69 years of age, had suffered from blood pressure, and an inquest win net bo necessary.
