A convict sentenced in 1831 to 20 years’ imprisonment for robbery has become famous as a poet at Walla Walla, Washington. He is Adrian Huffman. who turned to verse as a pastime for the long years of prison that stretched before him. He is still in prison, but is now one of the bestknown poets in the Pacific NorthWest. He has won a national poetry prize, sold 600 copies of his first book, and has been offered posts on three publications. One of Huffman’s first poems was published in the prison’s monthly paper and attracted the attention of two writers. They gave him a correspondence course in writing, after which his work rapidly came to the notice of newspapers and magazines.
