Munich greeted the opening of the Olympic year with a great fireworks display. At the Wittelbsicher Fountain the sky was illuminated for 15 minutes by 16,000 rockets. The five coloured rings, the symbol of Iho Olympic Gaines, blazed forth in their original colours during the display, and bore the illuminated caption " Munich greets the Olympic Year."
