REPORTS OF COMMITTEES The following is a summary of the reports of the various committees which will be presented at the monthly meeting of the Otago Hospital Board on Thursday evening next: — BENEVOLENT COMMITTEE. The Benevolent Committee will report that during the past month 16 cases for relief have been dealt with at a weekly cost of £ll 7s lOd. 'Casual cases for relief amounting to £461 13s 5d were approved. One man received six days' work at the board's institutions at a total cost of £3 15s. The application from the adjutant, Salvation Army, for payment of board and lodging to men who are waiting for their sustenance money, has been declined. SANATORIUM COMMITTEE.
The Sanatorium Committee will report that the chairman, the medical superintendent, the medical director and the secretary have been authorised to actin any future cases of complaint regarding the conduct of patients at Wakari Hospital.' No action is to be taken regarding the suggestion for a wider turning space for motor cars at Pleasant Valley Sanatorium. HOSPITAL COMMITTEE. The Hospital Committee will recommend that the proposal of the Directorgeneral of Mental Hospitals Department, endorsed by the honorary medical staff, •that Dr D. H. Hayes be appointed an honorary physician in charge of mental cases, with beds in the new block at the Dunedin Hospital, be approved, subject to the appointment being made annually and on the understanding that such does not imply that this officer will always be appointed to this position. The committee will further recommend that Mr J. Renfrew White, the orthopaedic surgeon, be appointed the surgical officer, who will be responsible for a properly defined syllabus of instruction as required by the Massage Registration Board, remuneration, lectures, and classes to be in terms as provided in the schedule, previously adopted by the board. A further recommendation from the committee will.be that Dr A. J. Cottrell be appointed an assistant ophthalmic surgeon on the honorary visiting staff of the Dunedin Hospital for the year 1936-37. The committee will report that the medical superintendent has submitted a report on the rearrangement of the surgical staff of the Hospital. There will be three general surgical wards under Mr Bell, Dr Fergus, and Mr Jenkins respectively, and one orthopaedic ward under Mr White. JOINT RELATIONS COMMITTEE. The Joint Relations Committee will recommend that three surgeons and one orthopaedic surgeon be appointed to the honorary visiting staff of the surgical department, and that Dr Charles North be granted 11 months' leave of absence to vieit England. The committee will also recommend that four anaesthetists be appointed and that Dr D. G. M'Millan be granted leave of absence from Dunedin for certain periods during which months he will not bo paid, advice to be given when absent from Dunedin. • HONORARY VISITING STAFF. The Joint Relations Committee will recommend that the following appointments be made to the honorary visiting staff for the year 1936-37: Medical Department. —Three physicians: Dr D. W. Carmalt Jones (chief of service), Dr P. Fitchctt, Dr S. A. Moore. One physician for diseases of children: Dr E 11. Williams. One assistant physician for diseases of children: Dr A. J. C. Hanan. Three assistant physicians: Dr C. R. Burns, Dr W. J. Porteous, Dr J. A. D. Iverach. Surgical Department.—Throe surgeons: Mr F. Gordon Bell (chief of service). Dr T. Fergus, Mr James A. Jenkins. One orthopaedic surgeon: Mr J. Renfrew White; one assistant orthopaedic surgeon: Dr H. Walden Fitzgerald. Three assistant surgeons: Dr Roland H. Fulton, Dr Geoffrey Barnett, Dr N. C. Speight. Three surgical registrars: Dr N. C. Speight. Dr A. Perry, Dr H. Walden Fitzgerald. Gynaecological Department—One Gynaecologist: Professor J. B. Dawson (chief of "service); one assistant gynaecologist: Dr Charles North (Dr North granted 11 months' leave of absence), Dr Gerald P. Fitzgerald (acting). One gynaecological registrar: Dr Gerald P. Fitzgerald. Department of Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat. —Two ophthalmic surgeons: Dr W. E. Carswell (chief of service), Dr Kenneth, Ross. Assistant ophthalmic surgeons: Dr S. L. Gcerin, Dr R. E. Butchart. Anaesthetists.—Four anaesthetists: Dr Marion Whyte, Dr J. R. H. Fulton, Dr D. G. M'Millan (to advise when absent from Dunedin), Dr J. D. Cottrell. V.D. Department.—One medical officer: Dr Charles M. Greenslade. Infirmary Ward, Caversham.—One physician: Dr W. H. Borrie.
