UNTOWARD HAPPENINGS IN THE OCTAGON MANY PEOPLE TURN ASIDE, TO INVESTIGATE!
The remark “What’s all the excitement down at that shop?” passed by a stranger to Dunedin truly voices the question that has been on many people’s lips as they’ve passed the Octagon during the last few days. At 11 hours of the day there’s been a crowd outside Paterson Bros., “The Shop for Men’s Wear.” To the visitors hut newly arrived in the city the sign above their premises, “Pick ’em Quick,” Smoke Sale may mean but little. To men and to women who buy for men it has meant a great deal, and the news that the sale closes definitely to-morrow has resulted in a frenzied rush of people anxious to benefit by the “Pick ’em Quick” prices before it is too late. With in eye to see just what was offering, our representative stepped inside. The fact that he bought shirts, sox, underwear, and incidentals, despite the fact that he’d brought his wardrobe up to date before the holidays, speaks volumes for the prices at which new season’s stocks must perforce be cleared. As an instance, tip-top Blazers, usually priced, at 22s 6d, are now going at 12s 6d; Fancy Cashmere Sox, 2s fid: Shirts, ss, 7s, Bs, and 12s; Overcoats, many at half-price, all drastically reduced; Lambswool Singlets. 4s 3d, 6s fid, 9s Cd, to 10s fid; Wool and Cotton Underpants, 4s lid; Shorts, 3s 3d to 6s fid. That Patterson Bros, buy the best that can be secured is evident to anyone; their decision to quit everything so that there shall be no possible doubt that anyone buying at. a later date is securing absolutely undamaged stock is a windfall for Dunedin menfolk. The pity is that the sale ends to-morrow, as it leaves such a short time in which those in need of clothing can buy at prices which are the result of smoke and water combining to have Patterson Bros, sell at cost and under cost in so many instances.—l3l27.
