ABOLISHING SLAVERY

PROGRESS IN NORTHERN BURMA. 5000 TO BE RELEASED. (Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.) DELHI, January 12. Following the release of numerous slaves in the Kukuwag Valley, in the Southern Shan States, Northern Burma, last year, the Burmese Government has informed the Kachin Hills chiefs that slavery in their territory must cease. Compensation will be paid. It is estimated that 5000 slaves will receive their freedom as the result of the '’efforts of the British Administration in Baluchistan. The ruler of Kalat, a powerful chief, announces the total abolition of slavery.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
