I have just met President Pera Font Altimir, chief of Andorra, the oldest and smallest republic in the world, writes a correspondent in a recent issue of the London Daily Mail. Lying high up in the Pyrenees between France and Spain, Andorra has preserved its feudal character for more than 1000 years. Its head, who receives but £3 annually, is a man of 55, tall, rugged, and genial. Leaving his flocks and herds on the mountain side —for this mediaeval ruler is a peasant and caitle owner first and a statesman after wards—he greeted us with easy courtesy j and entertained us at luncheon. The President is u progressive, but must move slowly among a people who sling suspic ously to a policy of splendid isolation. Mo told us that when the road was built from the Spanish frontier the whole country was up in arms against this devilish and revolutionary change Filey lay down on the track and wept long and copiously. Anot.he. time, he said, a syndi cate wanted to plant a gambling saloon in the centre of this quiet land, but in face of the threatening attitude of the Andorrans the promoters fled. There are no journals or newspapers in Andorra. “Two foreigners,” said the , President, “wanted to start a newspaper ’ | Ho smiled broadly. “My people chased them out.” The President lives in a house like a , Swiss chalet with huge eaves. In the palace I found a curious mixture of business and pleasure. The dining-room has benches belli long and hard and adjacent to it is a gigantic kitchen where an ox can bo roasted whole. For a good dinner, so the President declared, is essential to law-making in Andorra. , At first sign o worms give WADE S | WORM FIGS —wonderful worm worriers. I Safe, pleasant remedy. Chemists and stores. —Advt.
