THE LATE MR JAMES FLEMING.
PUBLIC-SPIRITED SOUTHLANDER. TRIBUTES TO HIS WORK. (From Odb Special Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, January 13. Prior to the commencement of the business at the month!}’ meeting of the Southland Hospital Board, held this afternoon, the chairman (Mr John Matheson) made feeling reference to -he death of Mr James Fleming. In moving that a letter of condolence bo sent to the late Mr Fleming’s relatives, Mr Matheson referred in detail to deceased’s activities as a member of the board and various public bodies in Southland. He had been the representative of the Southland County Council on the board for 24 years, had been chairman from 1917 to 1922, and had taken a deep interest in the farm work at Lome, and, indeed, at all the hospital institutions in Southland. He had also been interested in the work at the Waipaita Sanatorium. He had shown his interest in the affairs of the board by making a generous gift of £455 which, together with a Government subsidy, enabled the board to purchase some acres of land at Kew. Mr Matheson said that during his 43 years experience of the work of public bodies in Southland he had not met anyone who had done more for the whole of the community than had Mr Fleming. Messrs Colin Robertson and H. E. Niven also spoke of Mr Fleming’s career and good works, and the motion was carried in the usual manner, the board members standing in silence for a few moments.
