Dr Roberta left Dunedin yesterday by the second express on his return to Waimate. Dr W. G. Bridgman left by the first express yesterday to take up an appointment at the Timaru Hospital. A London cablegram states that it is rumoured in banking circles in London that Mr Scott, of the London branch, will be appointed governor of the Commonwealth Bank. Mr G. T, O’Hara Smith, assistant town clerk of Nelson, has been appointed town clerk of Dannevirke. There were 46 applicants for the position. Dr Alex. Gillies, who was on Tuesday night appointed senior resident surgical officer for the Dunedin Hospital, was born at Ravensbourne. He is the son of the late Mr Gilbert Gillies. Mr J. Hardie, winner of the handicap billiards tournament at the R.S.A. Club, was presented with a silver cup, the gift of the Auckland Sports Club to the local brance of the R.S.A. The cup is for annual competition. Consequent on the periodical transfer of Salvation Army officers. Captain and Mrs Rankin left Dunedin yesterday by the second express for Westport, Captain Scott for Brunnerton, and , Lieutenant Thomson for Wellington. Adjutant and Mrs Watkm will leave for Temuka in a day or two. Mr George Luckhurst, for the past six years steward at the Returned Soldiers’ Association’s clubrooms, was tendered a farewell social on Tuesday night, prior to his departure for Melbourne. The pres‘(le"t 'Mr P. S. Anderson), on behalf of the club, presented him with a wellfilled wallet in recognition of his services Mr Anderson referred to the tact and cheerfulness which had characterised the execution of his duties, and wished the departing guest and his mother the best of success. i S , ir G e ? r g e Murray, Chancellor of Adelaide University, speaking at the annual commemoration, which was held last month, mentioned the accession of Dr C S. Hicks, formerly of Dunedin, to the staff as one of the important gains the university had enjoyed during the year. Dr Hicks joined the staff of the university as lecturer in human physiology, but in recognition, the chancellor said, of his singular merits and attainments, and in order to afford some relief to Professor T. Brailsford Robertson, the Senate had created a new Chair of Human Physiology and Pharmacology, and conferred it upon Dr Hicks. The Sheridan Research Fellowship is held by Dr Hicks in conjunction with the chair. A London cablegram announces the dcatli of Baron Harclinge’s daughter, Mrs Diamond Evelyn Abercromby, who was bridesmaid at the Duke of York’s wedding. The presentation of a gold fountain pen and pencil was made by the Wellington Hospital Board yesterday (reports our special correspondent), to Mr J. Coyle, who has resigned his position as secretary to the board in order to take up an important appointment in Australia. To Mr and Mrs Coyle the board made a further presentation of a handsome silver afternoon tea service suitable engraved. An old and highly esteemed resident of Kartigi—Mrs Isabella M'Leod—died there last month, aged 82. The late Mrs M'Leod arrived in Dunedin by tbe sailing ship Heswick’s Bride Cl years ago, and shortly afterwards her husband and she took a farm at Kartigi, and up to ihe time of their deaths were the oldest residents in that district. They n-id a family of five sons and three daughters, of whom there are still living Messrs Alex. M'Leod, Glen Park, Shag Valiey Hector M'Leod, Kartigi; Donald M'Leod Stirling; Mrs C. J. Johnston, Karitane, and Mrs Caldwell, Kartigi. Everyone from fat and near who knew Mrs M'Leod had a good word to say for her. Her hospitality to friends and strangers was unbounded, and her decease is a distinct loss in the Kartigi district. She was predeceased by her husband by about 18 months
