THEFT BY FIREMAN.

ENGINEER’S SUITCASE STOLEN. (Special to Daili Times.) WELLINGTON, January 12. The theft of a suitcase and contents valued at £2O, the property of Milroy Smillie, was admitted by James Rooney, a fireman, aged 33, in the Magistrate’s Court this afternoon. . . Chief Detective Ward stated that the accused took the case from the chief engineer s cabin of the Maheno yesterday afternoon. The engineer later found it hidden in the bunkers. Rooney, who said that he under the influence of liquor at the time, had been fined £1 for theft in Auckland In 1915. Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M., imposed a fine of £5. in default 21 days’ imprisonment.
