PREFERENCE TO UNIONISTS. STATEMENT BY MR JUSTICE BEEBY. (Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright.) MELBOURNE, January 11. The Commonwealth Arbitration Court commenced hearing the claims of the Waterside Workers’ Federation which were in dispute during the recent overtime strike. The claims include preference to members of the federation. Mr Justice Bceby, referring to the latter issue, said that preference would be granted only if the court was satisfied that it would lead to continuity of work and the settlement of disputes. It would be granted only,as an aid to industrial peace, and would not be given, as a matter of fact, to aid unions in acquiring power in other directions.
A BLACK OUTLOOK. HEAVY DISMISSALS OF UNIONISTS. SYDNEY, January 11. The secretary of the Austrlaian Workers’ Union report that during the past two months over 1000 members'' of his union, employed on railway construction works, have been dismissed. Ho says the outlook for the future is very black, as further heavy dismissals are anticipated. The Railways Department states that the men were dismissed as no further work was available.
