CULPABLE CARELESSNESS. STUPIDITY COSTS £40,000. SYDNEY, January 11. In the Police Court at Wagga Leslie Sterck was fined 30s on a charge of carelessness in connection with a fire which occurred on December 19, causing £40,000 worth of damage. The police gave evidence that the bush fires which swept the Murrumbiclgee Valley, near Wagga,_ were caused by Sterck lighting a fire in an open fireplace among dry grass in order to boil water. A strong wind was blowing, and the fire broke away. When accused was asked why he did not attempt to extinguish it, he said he could not put out the fire with boiling water.
