DOMINION TOURNAMENT. THE SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP. OPENING DAY’S PLAY. (Peb United Pbess Association.) AUCKLAND, January 10. The Dominion bowling tournament, which is this year under the control of tho Auckland Centre, commenced in beautiful weather to-day with the Singles Championship. The Rinks Championship will commence on Wednesday, and tb- Pairs next Monday. Of the record entering of 277 competitors, comprising a party from Australia and prominent bowlers from all parts of the Dominion, 85 were left in the Singles Championship at the close or the play to-day. Seventeen of these are two-lifers and 68 are one-lifers. Four rounds were played today. The position in the different sections at the end of the fourth round was as follows : SECTION A. No loss —Fletcher (Takaka); one loss — Torrance (Ponsonbv), Pilkington (Hamilton), Addison (Edendale), Bremner (West End, Auckland). SECTION B. No loss —Allatt (Melbourne): one loss— Gia.tland (Onehunga). Hindle (Balmncewen), Gould (Carlton), Rawnsley (Papatootoe). SECTION C. No loss —Edwards (Temuka); one loss — Hosking (West End, Auckland). Effbrd (Fdgeware), G. Clark (Mount Albert), Eckersley (Manawatu). SECTION D. No loss—Russell (Rernuera); one loss— Ball (Carlton). Foster (Caledonian, Dunedin) is not competing. MTntyre (Hamilton) had a sensational win over Maxwell Walker (Auckland) in Section K, scoring 21 to 7. Walker was almost eliminated in the fourth round, Fastier (Green Island) being three up with one head to go. Fastier foolishly threw a long head. His first bowl was five fees away, and this proved to be the closest bowl ho sent up. Walker drew four inside that and won by one. , Best (Dunedin), a former champion, found the going in Section G too hard to allow his machine-like delivery to be brought into full play. He gave a poor display and was eliminated. . , Parsons (Ponsonby) once again proved that he is a singles player of outstanding merit, and was undefeated in section 1, winning all his games with ease. Bremner (West End), runner-up in 1924, lost one of his lives to a youthful exponent, Fletcher (Takaka), in section A. Fletcher was unbeaten. Allatt (Melbourne) upheld the prestige of the visiting Victorians, being undefeated in section 13. Kilgour (Carlton), a former champion, heads section J with no losses.

Smcllic (Grec Island) beat Evcritt (Otahuhu) 18—11, and Routley (Kelburn) 18—9, and Carbines (Ponsonby) 21—6, but lost his last game to Kilgour, 91 11.
