The John, which arrived here yesterday afternoon, from Wanganui and Wellington, will sail to-day for Wellington, Wanganui, and New Plymouth, via ports. The collier Canopus was docked at Port Chalmers yesterday morning for cleaning and painting in connection with her annual overhaul. The Waipiata and Kahika will be recommissioned to-morrow at Port when craws will sign articles. The Waipiata will come to Dunedin on Thursday to load for East Coast ports and Auckland. The Kahika will also come to Dunedin on Thursday to load for Wellington, Napier, and Gisborne. Th o Calm, which is undergoing overhaul at Port Chalmers, will load at Dunedin about Thursday for Tiraaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, and Wanganui. Tho Breeze has been fixed to load at Dunedin on January 17 for Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, and Wanganui. Under the recent agreement between the emp’oyera and the Lyttelton waterside workers, overtime is to bo worked each Saturday when required, from 1 p.m. till 5 p.m. The Tremeadow is timed to leave New York on January 13 for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. Tho Kauri is to sail from Auckland on January 15 for Newcastle to load for Wellington. She has been at Auckland for some weeks undergoing an extensive overhaul. Tho Kaiwarra Is expected to leave Melbourne to-day with Australian produce for discharge at New Plymouth, M ellington, Napier, and Auckland. ■ - Tho local agents for the A. and A. Luxe advlso that a steamer has been fixed to load during February and March at New York for Timaru, Bluff, and Wanganui, besides the main ports of New Zealand, With oil from Port Arthur, Texas, tho Karpfanger is due at Auckland on February 10. She will then proceed to Napier, Wellington, New Plymouth, and Australian ports, to complete discharge. An arrival at Wellington on Sunday was the American Trading Company’s motor vessel Lionel, with a cargo of case oil from Port Arthur, Texas. Her cargo is for the Texas Oil Company. From Wellington the Lionel will proceed to Auckland and Australian ports. . - The steamer Verhania is expected to leave Melbourne to-morrow for Weetport, where she will bunker. She will later proceed to Lyttelton, Wellington, Napier, and Wanganui, to load wool for Dunkirk and other English and Continental ports. She will sail finally on February 5 from Wanganui. Cable advice received by the Commonwealth and Dominion Line states that tho motor ship Port Dunedin, hound from London to Australian ports, passed the Cape of Good Hope on December 23. The auxiliary four-masted schooner Margot, 890 tons gross register, which was reported sold to colonial buyers a few months ago, has been renamed Margaret W., and left the Tyne on November 12 for Mauritius. According to reports this vessel was purchased for the New Zealand trade.
KIWITEA LOADS AT MELBOURNE. The Union Company advises that the Kiwitea. after discharge at Bluff next week, will go to Hobart and Melbourne to load for Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. THE MELBOURNE STEAMER. From Melbourne direct, with passengers, mails, and cargo, the Union liner Maheno arrived at Wellington at 8 a.m. yesterday. She is to sail this afternoon for Lyttelton and Dunedin. Due here on Thursday morning, the Maheno Is timed to sail on Friday afternoon for Bluff and Melbourne. WELLINGTON-PICTON SERVICE. The Union Company advises that the Tamahlne is timed to leave Wellington at 9 a.m. on Saturday, January 22, instead of 1.15 p.m., the customary time, for Plcton. WAIHORA FROM CALCUTTA. Carrying a large shipment of Eastern merchandise, the Union Company’s freighter Walhora arrived at 'Wellington at 6 a.m. yesterday from Calcutta. The vessel is to sail to-day for Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Bluff to complete discharge. She is due here about Sunday next. KAIRANGA LEAVES SYDNEY. Advice received by the Union Company states that the Kairanga left Sydney at 6.30 a.m. on Saturday with a large shipment of general cargo for discharge at Bluff. Dunedin, and Lyttelton. The vessel’s freight for this port Includes transhipments ex the Fordsdale, Peshawur, Dortmund. Madraln Maru, Bullaren, Changte, City of Palermo, Djambl. and Houtraa,n. The Kairanga is due here on Friday. CANADIAN EXPLORER REPORTED. Advice received by Messrs H. L. Tapley and Co. states that the Canadian Explorer, which left Halifax on December 25 for New Zealand ports, cleared the Panama Canal at 11.30 a.m. on January 4. The vessel Is due at Auckland about February 11, and at Dunedin about February 25. TRELISSICK FROM MONTREAL. The steamer Trelissick, from Montreal, via Panama, arrived at Auckland late on Friday night. The vessel Is carrying eral Canadian cargo for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Australian ports. She is due at this port about January 22. SUSSEX FROM EASTERN PORTS. Laden with a cargo from Calcutta, Penang, Singapore, and Samarang, the Federal line steamer Sussex arrived at Auckland on Saturday. After the discharge of the Auckland portion of her cargo from the East, she will later proceed to Wellington, Lyttelton, Timaru, Dunedin, and Bluff to complete discharge. She is due here about January 20. CITY OP CHRISTIANIA REPORTED. The A. and A. Line’s chartered steamer City of Christiania, which sailed from New York on December 22, is reported to have reached Colon on January 3, en route to Levuka, Suva. Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Sydney. She 1s due at Auckland about February 6. OTARAMA LEAVES NEWPORT NEWS. Cabled information has been received by tho New Zealand Shipping Company that the Otarama, from St. John to New Zealand ports, cleared Newport News on January 4. The vessel is due at Auckland on February 14, and at Dunedin about two weeks later. CAPTAIN S. C. WARNER RETIRING. The P. and O. liner Maloja arrived at Sydney on December 30 from London, via ports, after another successful trip. Captain S. C. Warner, one of the most popular commanders in the P. and O. service, will reach the retiring age next year. Captain Warner served his time in the old clipper ship Tweed, and he has been trading to Australia off and on for a period of 30 years. He was in the F. and O. branchlincr Ballarat for two years, and was commander of the Maloja for three years and a-half. Captain Warner is a cousin of ‘■plum" Warner, the crickelcr.
H.M.S. WAKAKURA. Ii.M.S. Wakakura (the Red Canoe), tho Dominion's new mine-sweeper, which is making a prolonged voyage from England, arrived at Samoa on December 30. She will next call at Suva, and is expected to reach Auckland about January 19. When the Wakakura sailed from Portland on June 15 last year, it was expected that she would complete her voyage early in November, but a series of accidents has delayed her by over two months. Between Cape Verde and Bermuda engine trouble developed, and she was laid up at Bermuda for repairs. Thence all went well until the sweeper had .passed through the Panama Cana] into the Pacific, when stormy weather again delayed progress, so that, when she left San Diego, California, for Honolulu, she was a month behind schedule. But again the engines gave trouble, and the Wakakura broke down at sea. On November 20 she was picked up by the American cruiser Pittsburg and towed to Honolulu, where she was again laid v>p for repairs. A Canadian-built "Castle” type vessel of 547 tons, the Wakakura carries a crew of 23 all told. On arrival in New Zealand she will be used as a mine-sweeper, and also as a training ship for naval reserve men.
