VISIT FROM AUSTRALIANS. NEGOTIATIONS CONTINUED. MELBOURNE CLUB TEAM PROBABLE. (Special to Daily Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 10. The Management Committee of the New Zealand Cricket Council has been most anxious to secure the visit of an overseas team during ihe present season in view of the forthcoming English tour. Negotiations wore entered into with South Australia, but these broke down on the question of terms, the South Australians stipulating for 15s a day expenses, while the council resolutely refused to give more than the maximum ever granted to a. visiting team — 10s a day. The council's Australian representative, Mr T. Howard, was then advised to ask the Board of Control to send an Australian team, but he replied that in view of the New South Wales visit to Western Australia and the Dlacartney benefit match at Sydney, it was improbable that a good team could be sent. Nowise perturbed, the Management Committee approached Mr Hugh Trumble and asked for a Melbourne Club side, with Trumble as manager. After many cables had been exchanged it has now been definitely arranged that a side shall be sent subject to the governing body’s approval. The team will include: Hendry, Ransford, Armstrong and Ebhng, with possibly two other internationals. Such a side should give the New Zealand team a good try out before the start of its great adventure.

SOUTH OTAGO MATCHES. The South Otago Association’s Shield matches were resumed on Saturday afternoon, when the weather was dull and threatening, whilst a couple of rain showers slightly interfered with play. The principal fixture was that between Lovell’s Flat (hitherto unbeaten this season) and Kaitangata (runners-up), the match resulting in a victory for Kaitangata by 12 runs. Lovell’s Flat at one stage appeared to have the match well in hand with five wickets down for 85. but the glorious uncertainty of cricket was experienced, and the team’s tail added only two runs for the last four wickets. Milburn defeated Milton B on the latter’s ground by 75 runs, although victory was snatched only within the last minute after an extension of play for half an hour. By their victory on Saturday, Kaitangata head the northern division clubs by two points, with Lovell’s Flat, who have played a match less, next. KAITANGATA v. LOVELL’S FLAT. Kaitangata met Lovell’s Flat on the former’s ground, the match being witnessed by the largest number of spectators ever seen at a cricket match at Kaitangata. The home team, batting first, knocked up 110, five of the players contributing double figures, Kitto heading the list with 25 not out. A feature of the match was Gale’s bowling for Lovell’s Flat, he securing six wickets in four overs bowled, three caught in his second over, and throe bowled in hi 3 fourth over. Lovell’s B’lat commenced well and had lost only five wickets for 85, but after the departure of Gale (30), Hoads (26), and .Hadcroft (19), the remainder of the team collapsed, the innings closing for 98, thus leaving Kaitangata victors by 12 runs.
