NIGHT TENNIS.
NUISANCE IN SYDNEY. (From Oob Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY, May 1. When some time ago lawn tennis courts for hire and for use mainly at night were established in tho suburbs the people in tlte neighbourhood accepted them cheerfully as a novelty and in the belief, jiossibly, tuat in adding to the amenities of life they were improving the value of their properties. But wilß the tremendous increase of these tennis courts in all directions tho discomfort and annoyance of them is coming home to neighbouring dwellers who prefer a quiet night and an early restful sleep and special powers for the regulation of the courts, especially at night, are now being urged. The glare of the lights, tho noise of the play and of the youthful players, and tho recovery of balls that tall into adjoining allotments and backyards constitute an increasing trial for the neigh, bearing householders. Practically all that the councils can do at present is to restrict play late at night, but there is an insistent feeling that they will have to do a lot more if. life in the neighbournood of some of these tennis courts is not to be. come intolerable. Young and giddy youth must have its fling: but their more sodato elders, who want a quiet, night, and who like to shut tho eyes in sleep at an early hour, feel that they also have rights which ought to bo respected.
