RAILWAY SERVICES.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —The residents and users of the railway between Milton and Mosgiel should teel very grateful lor the very exceptional opportunities offered them to get to and from Dunedin. Every revision of the timetable has resulted in the later running to destination of the evening train to Dunedin. Suppose any resident of Allanton wanted to pay a visit to Dunedin to go to an amusement or attend a meeting they have to catch a train from Allanton at 9.30 a.m. arriving in Dunedin at'10.25 a.m. They cannot get a train after the meeting or entertainment is over, but have to wait till the next day. People cannot bo expected to use tile railways when such conditions prevail. If the timetable is revised many more times, the writer expects that ultimately sleeping accommodation will be provided and so make the Milton to Mosgiel service more up-to-date. Every consideration to users of the railway seems to bo centred in giving concession to express train travellers. Districts within the suburban areas are not as well catered for as they were 30 years ago, and for a local main line service the Milton to Mosgiel is discreditable to the management. There is a rumour that the 9.5 a.m. Dunodin to Clinton train is to be altered to 7.10 a.m. to run ahead of the express to pick up passengers for the express. It is to be hoped that no such alteration is mv-le. J cannot see why the 8.35 a.m. train from Dunedin to Invercargill and the 1.40 p.m. train from Invercargill could not be run as uini passenger trains stopping at every place where required throughout the year instead of cutting out three days a week during the winter months—the very time when a fast service is wanted, as it is not pleasant to go long distances on slow mixed trains, that commercial men have to use when the usual winer “cut” is made. My advice is to sweep away all the main line 15-mile-an-hour trains and put on trains that will rim much faster and not be a block on tho main line. Allanton is 15 miles from Dunedin, and on tho main line, which is a single one and can he reached in 30 minutes bv using a motor car.—l am, etc., SrEED-TJP. May IL.
