RIFLE SHOOTING.
CLOSE OF NATIONAL ASSOCIATION’S MEETING. J> J. ANDERSON WINS THE KING’S PRIZE. NEW* PLYMOUTH SUCCESSFUL IN ; TEAMS’ MATCH. (Fsa United Press Association.) TRENTHAM. May Y. Tho weather this moripng was bright and. < sunny after a frosty night. 'lhe Dominion' Match (15 shots at 600yds) was the- first fired. Among the first details down, Anderson (the Belt leader) made 71 out of a possible of 75, and no one has touched that yet. It is notable that Anderson, ' after securing fiftn place in the aggregate on the first day of the Belt series, jumped to tho lead on Alonday, and was never displaced. Tho gold medal for the best Senior Cadet aggregate in A (service snooting) and B senes was won by R. Hare (Wellington), with a score of 579. H. Judkins (Christchurch) was runner-up witn 540. The fight for the Belt was shorn of excitemenc by the leader’s 10 points advantage at the start, and Nicholl, his nearest attendant, had difficulty m opening his account. His two signters were misses, but he began business with a couple of bulls, and then sampled all kinds of hits except outers. The weather was excellent, and was the best seen for years for the King’s Alatch. The wind was light and from the right and easy to follow as a rule, but alternating brignt sunlight and clouds caused elevation troubles. Nicholl and Anderson occupied targets 12 and 13 respectively in the middle of the range. While Nicholl was struggling with unproductive sighters, Anderson got 4 and decided to keep it later. Thb two men’s cards at the end of the shoot road;— Anderson, 435346355542 48 Nicholl, 3553354534 40 • In the meantime Keir (who was sixth in the aggregate) and Guiney (eleventh) had been engaged in an interesting contest, each getting on 47 and coming up to second and third places in the final. Their tie required a shoot off as already stated. Their cards read:— Keir, 4545555545 - - 47 Guiney, 5455554455 47 Orr divided his score equally into bulls and inners, alknbing from thirteenth place to fifth. Hunt and Carter fell badly for old stagers, and. Hogg dropped to tenth place, but had the excuse that this ordeal . Was a new thing for him. Reston kept ; seventh place, while Frank moved up two *to sixth. There was a good deal of shuffling among the lower-placed men. Ching, H. Feast, and M*Kenzie were fortunate enough to compile good hits of 46 each, but they were so far behind that it could not benefit them greatly, so far, as fhd' bigger prizes were concerned. As the shadows of the flag poles began to lengthen eastward, conditions became even better than at the start, the light being steadier, but several men seemed in trouble ' nevertheless. Notable among these was the double ex-champion Roots, who notched Only 22. He certainly had not far to fall in the list, but he fell _ the whole way. Of the rest, the less said, perhaps, the better, . It is worthy of mention that the ■ King’s Fifty included eight B grade men and six tyros. So ends the 1925 New Zealand Bisley. and the camp to-night is almost deserted ■by riflemen, while all the winds that worried marksmen during the past week have, under ’Diana’s frosty gaze, gone into recess to devise new tortures for the aspiiing prize men next year. Anderson, the Belt winner, is a farmer at Kaituna, 23 years of age. This is his fifth season with the rifle. This marks the first, occasion on which a South Islander has captured the coveted honour since 1914, when Masefield won the Belt. The runnerup. Koir, shot for three years (1906-3) with the Rangiora Rifles, winning the company championship in 1808. He shot no more for 12 years, and began again with the Wakanui Club in Ashburton in 1920. Ho then joined the Ashburton Club. Last year he won tho Midfield Aggregate at Greytown. This is his fourth trip to Trenthain, and his first appearance in the King’s Fifty He has not lost his B grade status'. The third man, Guiney, is a well-known figure on the rifle ranges, beginning in 1911 with the Christchurch Rifle Club.
