SOUTH AFRICAN PREFERENCE
FAVOURED TREATMENT FOR BRITAIN. OPPOSITION’S TACTICAL VICTORY. Preai Association— By Telegraph—Copy»4«»v CAPETOWN, May 5. Tho decision of the Finance Minister (Mr N. C. Havenga) to modify South Africa’s trade policy by giving Britain the most-favoured-nation treatment is regarded as an important tactical victory for the Opposition. It is understood that tho change is due partly to Labour pressure, but the general public associate it with the influence of the visit of tho Prince of Wales. No doubt there has been a division in the Cabinet. The Nationalist organ. Burger, expresses jrroat dissatisfaction at the Government’s decision, which, it says, absolutely destroys the quid quo pro basis of tho fiscal policy, and urges the Government either to revert to original proposals or to abolish preference altogether.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
