ATHLETIC NOTES.
By Amatkue. Things are quiet just now in the athletic world. Thu different clubs have started on the winter harrier programme. Caversham and Anglican are both strong again this year, while Pacific nnd Civil Service have new runners. ’Varsity is au unknown quantity, although they had a pack of about 25 out last Saturday. That was their opening run. The first interclub event of tho season will be the Edmond Cup Steeplechase, which will take, place in about live weeks’ time. Most of the clubs have started to train for this popular fixture, and the cracks are quickly getting into their best form. Tapp may be expected to do very well this season, as he has wisely spelled during tho. summer after a very heavy cross-country season, while. Brown. Frye, and others have competed at the athletic meetings and may be expected to be a little stale. There was a line entry of cracks at a recent meeting of the Manawatu Club at Palmerston North, comprising several Wellington 'Varsity (Victoria College) champions, and including M. Leadbetter, C. Wilton, cleared 44P 30iin in the running hop, step, and jump championship, the winner being Kalaugber with 44ft lOin (allowed Ift, 45ft lOin). Kalaugber is very versatile, for he was second in the running high jump, third in the running broad jump, and also gave a smart exhibition of hurdling. A l(i year-old St. Patrick's College boy named Kelly won both the 220 yards and 410 yards handicaps from the limit. The Victoria College team won the 880 yards relay race in Imin 37see. Heavy rain submerged portions of the track, and it was exceedingly sloppy and holding everywhere. AU the same, some of the performances were very good. In the 100 yards championship the placings were;—K. L. Harris 1, J. Menvenette 2, J. Iv. Ayres-Oosterlaak 3. Time. lOsec. Oosterlank ran heavily bandaged owing to a recent accident. W. This description was ii| plied by George Hyde, the youthful Vitorian runner, at the farewell to the Air tralian athletes, to K. A. Rose, of Wait: rapa. Rose is a sport. Realising tli the controlling body was tip against financially over the tour, the Wairarnj runner has returned (o the council all th trophy orders which came his way wh:i< on tour with the team in the South Islam! These amount to about £S." Advices received by the last America r mail are to the effect that Charles W. Pad dock and Loren Murchison commence.] their much-talked-about world's tour or.
