HEAVY RAIN IN WELLINGTON. ' WORK STOPPED ON THE WATERFRONT. (Peb United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 5. Heavy rain haa fallen during- the- test three days, and the gauges recorded 1.68 m for the period. For the 24- houre preced- '; ing 9 o’clock this morning 96 points were recorded. It has been impossible to proceed with the handling of cargo at the waterfront, consequently a number of vessels have been delayed. The Hutt River to-day was 3ft above normal, and was still rising. . j STORMS IN CANTERBURY. FLOODS THREATENED. (Psb United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, May S A strong south-west gale with rain continued in Canterbury this morning, and further floods are feared. KAIKOURA, May 5. A severe electrical storm occurred here ‘ between 1.50 and 5 o’clock this morning Vivid flashes of lightning were followed by peals of thunder and a deluge of rain. Some of the thunderclaps fairly made the ■ (louses rattle. The Hapuka bridge ap- , proaches have been washed away, and traffic with the north is blocked. Strangely, this is the anniversary of the big May floods of 1923. If the rain continues as at present a record flood may be looked for. FLOODS AT LITTLE RIVER. A PHENOMENAL RAINFALL. (Per United Psess Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 5. Advice from Little River states that it haa been raining heavily all day. The worst damage to be feared is the fact that Lake Ellesmere is full from the last rain, and is rising steadily. If tho rain continues throughout the night it is feared that the whole of the valley may, be under water in the morning. At 4 p.m. the flood waters were all round the township, the main road being -flooded for half a mile. . * The rainfall at Little River for the 43 hours ended at 5 p.m. to-day was 6.32 in.
