SHEEPOWNERS’ FUND.

EXTENDING ITS SCOPE. TRAINING OF ORPHANED GIRLS. fPen United Pbkss Association.! PALMERSTON NORTH. May 5. The Hon. Mr Newman, chairman of the trustees of tho New Zealand Shipowners’ Fund, which for some time past has been successfully training tho sons of British seamen at Took House, has received advice as the result of which the work of tho fund is likely to bo greatly extended in tho direction of training the orphaned daughters of British seamen as well. Last month Mr Newman wrote to the president of the New Zealand Sheepowners Federation stating that he understood there was in the Treasury, and likely to be overlooked, a sum of approximately £20,000 standing to tho credit of tho undistributed surplus of the wool profits fund, which is tho property of those Now Zealand sheepfarmers whose wool was sold to tho Imperial Government during tho seasons 1916-17 to 1919-20 inclusive _ He felt that the sheepfarmers of the dominion would appreciate tho whole of tho money being handed over to tho trustees of the fund” who desired most urgently to extend the work to tho girls, and give the orphaned daughters of British seamen tho same chance in life on Now Zealand fa.rms as was now given to boys, i Mr Nowinan voceivod in roply a lotto stating that at a meeting of the executive it was unanimously agreed to support the proposal, with tho suggestion that. if possible, tho extra money for an extension of the present work of training boys be earmarked for training orphaned girls wilh a view to fitting them for some form of service in tho dominion. It was felt by tho executive of the federation that tho money would be well spent ir» this direction, and would result in an advantage to the girls themselves, and to the wives of Now Zealand farmers generally, through providing additional domestic help, tho shortage of which was such an acute problem ifpou Now Zealand farms and stations today.,
