THE SHARE MARKET
DUNEDIN STOCK ESCHANGBI/ The turnover on the Dtmedin Stock Exchange for the past week has been quite up, to the average, though business was fairly quiet during the first few days. The..last two days made up for this, a large number of parcels changing hands on each occasion. In banking shares, Unions, Zealoods.and Australasias have not changed their post* tiona, while Nationals and Wales have - advanced slightly. The • latter were available on Thursday at £l3 X7s 6d, but were sought yesterday at that figure without attracting a seller. Standard and National Insurances have had their usual good inquiry without producing sellers, while Zealanda and South British have registered a slight advance. The former were sold on four occasions:yesterday at 28s, and then once at 28a 5 Id. Shipping shares have received regular inquiry, and the ordinary issue of Hnddart* Barkers (cum div. and cum rights) has improved its position considerably, a parcel being turned over on Tuesday at 69s 9d. AU coal shares have advanced a little, and both issues of Westport-Stooktons are now being sought at prices at which they were rejected a few days ago. The preferential issue had a sale (cum div.) yesterday at Ba' 9d, and. the market closed with a buyer still offering.that figure. As usual, loan and agencies nave had plenty of inquiry, but few declared sellers, despite the fact that in one dr two instances improved prices have been offered. There has been more than the usual activity in meat preserving lines, but, apart from sales of the contributing issue ol New Zealand Refrigeratings, no business has been done. This lino, however, hod two sales oa Wednesday at 14a and one on Thursday at the same figure, while yesterday there wer* another two transactions—one at 14s Id and one at 14s Sd. Interest in miscellaneous shares has centred mainly round Paper Mills and Wilson’s Cement shares. A good deal of business has been done in these lines, and the prices have all improved a little. There were sales of both issues of Paper Mills at 25s on Thursday, and the old issue was sought yesterday at 25s 2d, with a holder offering at 25s 4d. "Wilson’s Cements bad sales at 23s 8d on Monday, 23a 9d and 23s lOd (reported) on Tuesday, and two (reported) at 24s 3d on Thursday. In War Bonds the inquiry for 4i per cents, has eased, but 6 and 5i per cents, are still being aohght at firm prices. Early in the week 1938 Bends and Inscribed Stock were turned over at £97 ss, but at a later date a parcel of the Bonds was released at £97. There has been a good deal of movement in mining shares, Waihi* having risen a little and then fallen book again, while Mount Lyella have gradually advanced until they realised 25a 6d and 25a 9d at yesterday afternoon’s calk The’market for these closed with a, 2d margin, tha buying and selling quotations being 25s 8d and 25s lOd respectively. Grand Junctions, which hod a sale at 8s 8d in the middle of the week, were offered yesterday at 9s, without attracting a seller.
