William Tweedie, Milton, wrote drawing attention to the "undesirable and dangerous practice of cyclists riding on the footpath in front of the High School.’’—Cr Russell said that the danger really existed. Some years ago there had been an arrangement reached that the borough was to take the path over, the Tokomairiro Riding to be the controlling body. The ratepayers of “Town of Hull’ wrote drawing attention to the dangerous state of Hill’s jetty. It was in a state of collapse and could not be used: longer as a landing for their properties.—Subscriptions amounting to £2O towards the erection of a new deep-water jetty were promised by the petitioners.—The Chairman, suggested that the council should give a”donation and allow tho people interested to erect the jetty themselves. —Some councillors questioned if the council had anything to do with the matter, —lt was decided to donate £5 towards the cost of the work. . _ Twenty-four ratepayers petitioned for a new footbridge across Salmond’s Creek on the back read. The council was asked to consider the erection of a traffic bridge capable of carrying up to three tons. Thirteen days’ carting were promised.—Cr Husaell said that the ■ creek had been almost impassable for the past two years even for cars. Sheep could not pass it. He had been told that a bridge would cost about £2OO, and he did not think it would bo necessary to erect the three-ton bridge—a structure equal to the car and sheep traffic would meet the position. He moved that a bridge of the kind he suggested should bo given.—Cr Scott seconded the motion. — Cr Clark asked how far the people had to go to get .past the creek. Ho thought the petitioners were asking a little too much. There were bridges in his county that were getting “pretty ricky,” but he had neverhad a penny tor bridges out of the general account—Cr Scott said that the people had to go two miles out of their way. Whatever was done, tho footbridge would have to bo replaced.—Cr Driver favoured tho motion, but he would not recommend the council to expend over much. It tho matter were left over for a little time it would probably be found that the settlers would do something more.—Cr Scott stated that he would he favourable to the erection of a bridge it its cost was to com© out of the riding account. They all had bad bridges in their ridings.—Cr Gardyne supported the motion and expressed the opinion that more help would be forthcoming from the settlers.—On the motion of Cr Driver it was decided that the iwo members for tho riding should interview the settlers, the original motion being withdrawn. , , ~ , R. F. Cameron, Pukoawa, asked that a gate" should be placed on the track leading into the Pukeawa quarry.—Writer to bo requested to erect the gate himself.
