RESCUE AT SEA
TRYING EXPERIENCE. (Pbb Unitbu Piikrs Association - ) WELLINGTON, March 7. At 2 o’clock on the afternoon of February 2 the Corinthic, which arrived at Wellington yesterday from Southampton, sighted a three-masted ■schooner in mid-Atlantic flying distress signals. Tho steamer altered her course, and when close to the schooner a small boat put off from the latter with the whole of (ho ship’s crow' anti all personal belongings, including everything of value whicli could easily be taken off. When the crew got aboard the Corinthic the captain of tlie schooner said that, the vessel was 47 days cut from Italy. with a cargo of salt, bound for Newfoundland. His ship,' the Margaret Ryan, had a succession of heavy gales, which had blown all the nails away and had started the schooner to leak. He was about 2000 miles from tho nearest land, and did not think the schooner ■would keep afloat much longer. The Margaret Ryan was fired by the crew 'before putting olf and abandoned.
