RIFLE SHOOTING

THE TBENTHAM MEETING. (Pen United Press Association.) TBENTHAM. March 7. A keen nip in the air yesterday morning betokened the presence of the frosty advance guard of autumn. It also presaged a gloriously fine day, ono of tho best since the shooting commenced. Tho promise was fulfilled from the spectators’ point of view, but there was a fly in the ointment for tho riflemen. As the morning progressed a treacherous right wind developed, and though tho first men down at tho £<X) yards of tho Ota"o Match had a fair run in practically a dead calm, tho later ones were iiard put to it to keep on the target, and many frequently got off it. For tho first hour, though tho wind was absent, the target faces were shadowed and the firing mounds wore in bright sunlight, and with an increasing mirage the elevation was the rock whereon tho scores were wrecked. When tho 800 yards was finished, the 900 yards stage of the Otago Match and a single range of the Taranaki Match (10 shots at 10C0 yards) were taken simultaneously, half firing on each of tho two adjoining ranges. Tho wind by now was in full charge, and though an occasional man got through in a good patch, the majority found the struggle an unequal one, and their cards showed many misses. Butler (Karori) got (he possible at 800 yards, and this was the only one at these long ranges. At times the mirage ran with extraordinary persistency, making the targets appear to bo dancing above the gnnsights. Altogether, the day furnished one of tho best examples of how really perverse Trentham can be. \v ith tho completion of the Taranaki Match, this loaves one (Hawke’s Bay, 10 shots at 800 yards) to be fired tomorrow morning. The following are loading for inclusion in the King’s Ffty, to fire for the Belt tomorrow afternoon (the possible points up to no>v is 500)Neiison (Napier) 431, James (Napier) 429, Barkis (Suburbs) 429, pi ox ten (Karori) 429, C. A comparison with yesterday s list shows a considerable shuffling of places. The most notable change is Turner’s disappearance out of the picture. H© only managed to get 15 at the ICOO yards, and his scores at 890 and 900 yards wore not sufficient to pull up the leeway. During the afternoon tho Champion Teams’ Match, for teams of five men, over 500, 500, and 600 yards, was fired, and very closely contested by ,25 entrants.
