< ; ' ANNUAL MEETING. Tho annual meeting of the St. Kilda * Mnnioipal B.mnd was held in ttie Band- - room, Stafford street, on Thursday evening ' The president, Mr H. R. ' ' > ' In .moving the adoption of the report and ; balance sheet, for "lust year the president . made special reference to the untimely death j of Mr G. B. Laidlaw, tho band's-'greatly resjweted and talented conductor; also to the deaths of Messrs John Harris, C. N. Scurr, and J. Ormiston White, vice-presi-dents, and Mr Alex. Hall and Mr G. Burns, ex-memibers. A tribute was paid to theJ; memory of thsse gentlemen, members stand5, ing in silenoß. Tho president also congratolnted the bond upon having oorne £ through with great credit the most strenuous year in the band's history,, due to tho , absence of members cm active service, and ! also_ to practically .all members of the band V having suffered from the influenza epidsnac. The oommittee's report showed the> mem- : liership of 'playing , members to be 31. three ; of whom are still away with the 'forces. . During the yew in addition to the bi-weekly . practices held, the band had paraded in uni- ■ form on no fewer than SO occasions, 22 of ij theso turnouts being for patriotic or eharit- * ablo purposes. Mention was also made of ■p tfcia '-spery small amount received by bands in the city {torn the City Council, the * amotmt of titis sobsidy being only £150, ' -which was divided amongst seven bandsj ; and a hope was expressed that the council would reconsider thk question and substantially increase the amount of the subsidy. ; In years such as the bands had been experiencing it great difficulty that they could earn sufficient for their actual maintenance, and it was felt that the work which had been, done of recent years must have been greatly appreciated by the general public, the bands at all times having been most willing' to forgo the private engagements of members in order that the men
