In the Ohau district the other day a 50-ocre farm -was sold at £105 per acre. A few nights ago the generator at the power-houso station at Raetihi was burnt out, plunging the town into darkness. The Manawatu Patriotic Society has at prc-spnt the substantial credit balance of £67,652. At the last meeting of the society payments on aooount of relief totalling £357 were authorised. Onoo more Paten's prospects of an ironsand industry at that port are on the wane (says the Star). It\ will be remembered that a year or two ago Mr Beskett secured rights over certain ironeand areas, and erected small works near the Patea bridge at which the ironsand was to be treated under a_ new prooesa. A few promising looking ingots of pig l iron were tornod out. but smelting operations then ceased, and the chairman of the Harbour Board mentions _ at a recent meeting that all the machinery had now bsen removed from the building-. The board, however, retained all brickwork, ete.
