GENERAL NEWS
On tho afternoon of the 23rd inst. tlie residents of Popotunoa assembled in the school grounds to celeihrato peace. An interesting event during the afternoon was the iplarrting of an oak tree- which was grown from an acorn many years ago'by a resident of tho district (Mr Robert Collins). Proceedings woi-e opened by Mr A. B. Stewart (chairman of the School Committee), who addressed the assemblage. Full justico was then dono to tho aflernoon tea provided by tho Indies. Races and sports were indulged in, toj-s and lollies being , dispensed among the children, and as a memento of the occasion each child v.-as presented with a silver medal. In the evening a concert and dance was held. Thu following- rendered musical items: —Solos: Mrs Collins and Messrs Stewart. Kear, and George Gray; duets by Misses Gray; and recitations by Miss Herd, Mr Sniith, and Master Milton Gray. Mrs William Melton acted 1 as accompanist, and, assisted by Miss Nellie Gray and Messrs Kear and Stanley Clement, supplied the music for the dance.
