Members will bo ablrf to hire aeroplanes at sp'-cial fee-- anil skilled pilots will ai.vays be available. —It is scarcely a figure of sneech to say that Sir Frederick Sykes, Controllergeneral of Civil Flying-, bears a charmed life. Most men who were in a machino which crashcd, involving the instant death of the pilot, would expect, at best, to bo severoly hurt. When this happened to General Sykes, he merely got a bad shaking, and was able to motor to London. Sir Frederick has been flying for eight years; he was amonfj the first of army to get his ticket. After serving with tne Expeditionary Force in .Franco for a year he took command of the Air Service at Gallipoli. —Mr N. 15. Carey, who has been appointed to succeed Dr J. A. Gilruth as Administrator of the Northern Territory of Australia, is a younger brother of Mr A. F. Oarcy of Christchurch. Mr Carey, who was born in England, joined the British I postal service early j n life, and worked his way up to the position of secretary to the Chief Secretary of the Post Office. Twelve or 14 years ago he came out to New Zealand to join the Department of Agriculture. It was there that ho met Dt Gilruth. who was principal veterinary surgeon for New Zealand.. When Dr Gilruth wont to Victoria in 1908 Mr Carey accompanied him. and four years later, when Dr Gilruth was appointed to the Northern Territory, the two men were still unseparated, as Mr Carey went to a Government position in connection with the_ administration. Ho has been in tho Territory over since.
