SWIMMING CARNIVAL

A SUCCESSFUL DISPLAY. At the Municipal Baths on Saturday evening a swimming carnival was hold in aid of the funds fcr providing a children's playground at Caversham. The carnival, wh ; ch was organised by Mr E. H. Olds' was largely attended, and was most ful in every respect, the result being that the fund will benefit to the extent of about £14. Valued assistance was lent by Mr T. Harvey and bis company of entertainers, and also by Mr Batt, second officer on the Mr ~ama. - -le various events on tlio programme were all very keenly contested by the juveniles, who thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Two very amusing events were the boys' tub race, won by Master Paul and the punt fight. The latter event was won by Master Henderson, who proved himself too skilful with the mop even against his grown opponents. A troupe of small girls gave an enjoyable exhibition of diving through hoops. A new and novel event was provided by Mr Olds in the form of turning back somersaults through a hoop of fire. Mr Oldß also gave a swimming display, w ; -Wi was greatly enhanced by the limelight rays thrown on the water. Another interesting 'and spectacular event was the sceno from Monte Cristo, with limelight effects. He scene opened with the arrest of Monte Cristo. who was then cast into prison, from which he subsequently escaped in the guise of the aged abbe, and was then thrown from a high platform into the water. The wardei3 acted their part very creditably, and the limelight efEeots gave the finishing touches to the whole scene. The display given by Mr Harvey and his company was a very spectacular one. A boat decorated with flowers was rowed about the baths, with a searchlight playing on the sceno. The boat contained Mr Harvey oncj. several other members of his company, who exploded an abundance of fireworks. Following olose in the waike of the boat was a submarine, the occupants of which gave a very good illustration of the way in which these craft attack '■heir prey. Mr Harvey and one of the lady members of his company also contributed several song 3 in a vory creditable manner. The whole roene, which had carefully worked out, was greatly enhanced by the beautiful limelight effects. A splendid tableau, entitled "Alone on the liaft," was next enacted, and those taking part received a well-deserved round 3'f appl&ue® The final scene was the Sight of an aCTtyplane, which was suspended on a wire near the roof of the building, and which when released, glided gracefully from one ejui of the wire to thf* othor.
