STATEMENT BY FIRST LORD. RAVAGES OF WAR MUST BE MET. LONDON, July 24 (delayed). (Received July 29, at 7.45 p.m.) Mr W. H. Loe£, 'First Lord of the Admiralty, in moving the Navy vote of £60,000,000 in the House of Commons, said the present strength of the navy was 1.00,000 as compared with 407,000 at the time of the armistice. He stated that out of 300 warships and 107 auxiliaries being constructed at the time of the armistice 84 warships and 110 auxiliaries, which were essential to meet the ravages of war were "now being completed. It would' have been bad economy to scrap th em owing to the advanced stage of construction reached.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
