Mr F. Aston, supervisor in the telegraph office at Greymouth, has received notice of liis promotion to bo suporvisor of the telegraph office at Invercargill. Among those who arrived in the dominion in the troopship Chupra, and -who reached Dunedin last night, was Private J. W Gow, hi civil life a member of tho reporting stail of the Otago Daily Times. Gable advice lias been received that Rifleman G. H. Bonfell, son of Mr J. T. Benfell, of Maybank street, North-East Vallsy, is returning home by the Somerset. Rifleman Bonfell went away with the 42nd Reinforcements.
Dr Truby King has accepted tho invitation of the Now South Wales Government to visit Sydney on his way from London to Now Zealand. Dr Truby King will arrive in Sydney in November.
Constable Macartney, of Mornington, has received advice that his son, who has been, on active service for almost three, years, and who gained his commission on tho field, is returning by the Somerset, due at Lyttelton on August 12. His Royal HighaßSs' tho Duke of Connaught, Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of England, has appointed Mr J. S. Webb as District Grand Master for Otago and Southland. This office, was rendered! vacant by tho death of Mr T. S. Graham Mi- C. D. Fox, P.D.G.M., Canterbury, wili arrive from Christchurch to-night, and will iiistal the District Grand Master Designate. Tho ceremony will take place in ticMasonio Hall, Moray place, to-morrow night. ' Mr I. A. Jan>es, manager of the State coal mines on the West Coast, has been promoted to tho position of general manager of the State coal mines of New Zealand. Mr James will have full control of the State collieries in tho West Coast district, and also of thoso in the North Island, and all the State coal depots in tho dominion will also come under his control. Mr James expects to tak6 up his now dutiss at an early date. His headquarters will bo at Wellington.
There died at Aucldand last week an old identity, Major Andrew Burns, agad 81, well known in Now Zealand for the last 59 years. Ho arrived in tho dominion by the ship Mermaid in 1860. Ho was lieutenant of tho Third Waikato Regiment during tho Maori war, and went through the whole campaign without a wound. Ho was captain of tho Hobson Rifles, and in 1666 was appointed major of " tho New Zealand Forces. Ho was well known in tho South Island as secretary of the Dunedin Hospital Trustees for 30 years.
Chaplain-captain Walter Winton, who was in charge of the Salvation Army's depot at Ccdford camp, England, for a considerable time during the war, and was thus brought largely into contact with New Zealand soldiers, has bean awarded tho decoration of Member of the Order of tho British Empire. Prior to his doparturo from New Captain Winton superintended tho Salvation Army's work among young [>eopl3 at Auckland, but he is ■well known throughout tho dominion by reason of his connection with tile financial activities of tho organisation.
At the rehearsal of tho Christchurch Orchestral Society last week tho conductor Mr Alfred J. Bunz, on bohiilf of the society and the orchestra, mado a presentation of a gold-mounted tobacco pouch, suitably inscribed, to tho leader of tho orchestra, Air C. G. O. Naumann, formerly of Dunedin, on tho ovo of his departure on transfer to tho Palmerston North Post Office. In wishing Mr Naumann prosperity and best of health in hia ns-w position, Mr Bunz expressed his personal appreciation of Mr Naumann's capable service as leader of iiio orchestra during tho time ho had bpen in Christcmireh. Mr W. T. Ward also expressed best wishes to Mr Naumann, who suitably responded.
