PORT CHALMERS BOROUGH COUNCIL.
At last night's meeting of the above u council there were present: The Mayor <Mr ; - J.-.-M.- Stevenson), Crs W. Jones. D, M--Mawson, I. Isbister, R. Allan, \Y. Love. W.Lunn, D. Macdonald, and J. Tait. The Works Committee reported that the streets, channels, etc, had been somewhat neglected owing to, the peace celebration pre- - parations, but an'endeavour would be made to overtake the work within the, next few weeks. A start had been made to repair the track from the upper railway end to ' the upper road.' The committee again recommended that 3£ chains of the . Laing : street path be .re-formed, and that screea- . ings be put on, at a cost of about £lo!-,' Ihe committee recommended that the Merrdian street footpath bo asphalted four feet wide from Fox street to Mr Asher's, at a cost of about £40.—The report was' adopted, and two tenders for the sanitarycontract were remitted to the committee. The Finance Committee's report showed a debit balance of £652 Is Bd, and the committee recommended (hat accounts-' amounting to £297 10s 9d bo passed fop payment. Receipts amounted to £127 17aId, and expenditure to' £297 10s 9d. The gas department showed a debit balance of;' : £3854 13s 9d, and the committee - recom--mended that accounts amounting to £38-' 16s 3d be , passed for payment. Receipts,." amounted to £55 7s lOd, and exuendifcure to £33 16s 3d. Tim felling of trees in tue cemetery would be finished next week.— Adopted. The Cliaiiman of the Gas Committee' remarked that he still required enlightenment; on man v matters relative to the working of the gasworks, and he would do his best to not further information. ■•"•■'
The District Traffic Manager of Railways wrote regarding representations made by West Harbour and Port Chalmers Borough Councils to have a train at 9.50 p.m. substituted for the 6.15 p.m. train from Dim-' edin on -Saturdays, expressing regTet that the request could not be granted.—Cr'Taitf moved that -the letter bo received, and that stronger representations be made to the Minister of Railways, throush tho membee"" of Parliament, pointing out the absurdity of the position, especially with regard to ■ the south train service, of which no notice had been taken in the letter received.—Cr ■..-.■ Macdonald seconded the motion, which Crs Isbister. Jones, and Mawson supported. . The Mayor thought tho letter was entirely- .. too abrupt, and no reason whatever was':' given to what he considered Port Chalmers, as the door of the larger City of "' Dunedin, was entitled.—The motion was', unanimously carried. ■■' ■"
On the coal ouestion being brought up Cr Lunn moved that the town clerk be instructed to write to the Coal Committee," Dunedin, asking for a periodical truckload of hard coal to supplement tho present meagre supply in tho hands of the community. .-.■.;.
