BOARD OF TRADE
PROPOSED EXTENSION OF ITS POWERS. (Pbb United P«ess Association.) WELLINGTON, July 28. Discussing Now Zealand's position in regard to price-fixing, the Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald said there was an impression abroad that the Board of Trade was the price-fixing authority in the dominion. '• 'Iliis is incorrect," says Mr Mac Donald. "Its functions end in making recommendations. But there is under consideration important amending legislation conferring great powers on the board. The whole of tho transactions of the board will be laid before Parliament shortly, and the public will see that a very useful amount of work has 'been accomplished." Tlie Minister remarked with reference to the question of the cost of living that Professor Fisher, of Y'ale University, had made a classification of the countries suffering least by rising prices. New Zealand was third on the list after India and Australia, but thq dominion's position in relation to Australia, had now been reversed, so that we now were second, comparing very favourably with any other country in the world.
