-North-East Valley branch of the W.C.r.U. hold its monthly meeting on Thursday. Mrs Peart presided. After the business had been transacted Mr Ford gave and helpful address, showing the different conditions at Home in connection with the drink traffic.

After a lapse of four years tho Otago University Capping Carnival will bo revived, tho dates for this year's festival having been Thursday and Friday, August 21 and 22. Tho carnival will embrace all the familiar features of former years, including the .procession, entertainments in His Majestys Theatre, and tho capping ball in tho Art Gallery. It is understood that preparations are well in hand, and that the carnival promises to bo quite as sucoossful as in past years.

A pleasant social was held in the Oddfellows Hall, Mosgiel, on Tuesday evenn cn , tl l c officers of the Druids and Uddioilows Lodges were entertained by thtf lady Foresters. Dancing, music, and slipper comprised an enjoyable programme ST?"™ « 36 ( Druids ) and Bro. M. Hendry (Oddfellows) acknowledged the kindness of tho ladies. Mr Himmell (Dunedin) provided the music for tho dance. Tlie residents of Brunswick street turned out in good numbers for their third social, which was hold in St. Peter's Schoolroom. Mr A. I M Indoe presided, and gave an address of welcome to tho returned men. in addition to thosa previously welcomed Messrs A. Douglas, W. and H. Brown, and A. iiiompson were present. Mr W. Brown thanked the residents for their waxm welcome. A musical programme was provided and moluded selections by tho orchestra songs by Miss Douglas, Messrs Handforth and bimnson, recitations by Mrs Hunter Mrs Scott, Miss Hensleigh, and Mr M'lndoe. Mr W. Hug-gins and Miss I. Douglas accompanied tho singers. Refreshments wore _ handed round, after which dancingwas indulged in. Messrs Logic and Wifl.nms acted a ? M.C.'s. and tho music was pxoraded by the orchestra.
