DISLOYAL UTTERANCES
POLITICIAN IMPRISONED. Presa Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, July 25 (Received July 25, at 11.5 p.m.) Mr M. P. Considine, M.H.R. for Barrier, has been sentenced to three months' imprisonment for disloyal utterances.
Til© prosecution arose out of words allc = e d tohavo been uttered by Mr Considino at tho G-reen Ilooni Club, Melbourne, on© evening last month. It is stated that on that occasion Mr Considino was admitted to the club premises on being- presented bv a member, and in the course of conversation, m which the King's name was mentioned uttered sentiments distasteful to some of the members. Subsequently a detective attached to the Defence Department made in. quines into the episode, and a summons was issuedl m the name of the State Commandant (Brigadier-general Brand). Mr Considine has been for soma years a w>nspicuou3 figure in Labour circles in Broken Hill, a centre whibh has long been noted for its advanced" Labour and unionistio thought.. Ho entered the Federal I arliament, without previous parliamentary experience, m May, 1917, being chosen in succession to Mr Josiah Thomas, who had represented tho Barrier in tho Labour interest gmco the inception of the cortunonwealth :n 1501. but who was expelled from the party when tho split occurred on the question of conscription.
