WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL

The ordinary meeting of tho Waikouaiti County Council was held yesterday; present—Crs Orbell (chairman), Briscoe, M'Gill. M'Lachlin, Laley, and M'Leod. Accounts amounting to £243 13s 9d were passed for payment. ' Tho inspector reported that surfacing had been doiw on the Stony Peak and Collins's roads, in the Hawksbury Riding. At Seacliff Reid's road had been surfaced, and metal broken in the ruts. Portion of Warren's road had been surfaced and metal broken and spread on it. The footpaths at SeaclifF had been trimmed, and tho watertables cleaned out, in various places. The bridge on tho Main road, near Comer Bush, had been repaired, and ruts had been filled in on Apes's road. Thirty yards of metal wore required for Russell's road. As metal was not carried on the railway at present the contractor for the Main road had not been abb to start work. Tho metalling contract on the Waitati-Wakari road was finished, but three pip© culverts would havo to bo put in and some overhanging scrub cut. In the Blueskin Riding 24 yards of metal had been spread and blinded on tho Waitati-Port Chalmers road, holes had been filled on the Hayward Point road, and water tables cleaned out in various places. A bridge at Waitati had been repaired. Thirty-six yards of metal were required to patch tho lower portion of the' Telegraph road. Tho two trees that Mrs Hitcncock (Waitati) had complained of were on an unformed roadline. —The report was adopted, metal to be procured for the Telegraph and Russell's roads. The member for the Blueskin Riding was instructed to see the owner of tho trees at Waitati. to endeavour to come to some arrangement. The balance sheet was received from the Auditor-general duly certified. Tlie District Engineer for the Public Works Department wrote approving of the tenders for carting shingle for the Main road; from Evansdalo to Palmerston.—Received.

In reply to a letter from the council regarding overhanging trees, the acting medical superintendent at Soacliff stated that tho matter would reccive attention in due course.—Received. Mr M. Cottle (Port Chalmers) asked permission to remove a small bank in front of his in Mill street. —Granted; tho work to he dono subject to tho approval of tho inspector. Mr G. H. Roskilley asked permission to erect a gate across the by-road through the property that ho had leased at Double Hill. —Referred to the inspector for a report. Tho secretary of the New Zealand Connties' Association intimated that a conference of delegates would bo held on September 3, to which tho council had the right to send a representative. He also asked to bo informed of any remits which tho council proposed to bring forward.—Received. Tho town clerk ,Port Chalmers, advised that tl'j? council's representations regarding the Main roa<J between Port Chalmers and Dunedin had been fully considered by "a committee, which had no recommendation to make. Its decision was confirmed by the coi iioil.—Received. A written petition was received from 14 residents of Puketeraki asking that the Bush road should bo re-formed and metalled.—Tho inspector was instructed to preparo an estimato of tho probable cost of the work. Messrs Williamson Eros. (Ne.nthorn) stated that a slip had occurred on the Zigzag road, which was left dangerous To traffic, and might eoon become impassable. —Tho matter was referred to the inspector, with power to act, Mr Alexander Cuthill wrote drawing attention to tho bad state of the road leading from tho church nt Wirrington to his property. Ho was informed that two vra.Ts ago a petition had been sent to tho council asking it to havo the road fixed up. but so far nothing had be-en done. He found it quite impossiblo to get anyone to <!o the carting owini? to the slippy clay surface, a.nd ho would hold the council responsible if his horse should In-oak a leg owing to the holes in the road.—Tlie inspector was instructed to s"iid tho surfaceman to repair tho culverts and surface the road.
