EMPLOYEES PROSECUTED. FINED FOE STRIKING. In the Magistrate's Cuurt yesterday beforo lUr H. y\ Widdowsou, S.M., tile mspcotor ot awards (.Air L. D. Browett) claimed the sum of £10 Irom John Spiers Alexander Miidlater, Jamos Williams, Bruiio Gordes, Robert Bovan, Joseph Williamson, James Stoddart, John Douoghue, John Sharpies, Kruest Bovan, Frederick Tetiow, and Johu Moldrum for a breach of the Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Act in that they took part in a strike. Air W. 0. MacGregor appealed for the Labour Department, and Mr Hay for the defendants. This case was an echo of the lloslyii Mills dispute. Mr Hay said that the defendants admitted a.strike, but ho would, like to add that the union as a whole did not stiike, as was stated in tho information. Mr MacGregor said it had not been intended to suggest or urge that the union was a party to tho strike, and he would agree to an amendment of the information. Proceeding, Mr MacGregor said that by reason of tho strike these men lost eight full working days, involvine a substantial loss to Messrs Ross and Glendining. Mr Hay said the matter had not been a serious ono. The 12 defendants had been employed in the spinning room, and had ceased work out of sympathy with a foreman who had been superseded. It seemed to him that with a little- more tact tho wholo thing might bavo been satisfactorily adjusted. Tho Magistrate: It was a rather serious matter, however, and there was certainly need for tact on both sides. The defendants wotc parties to an award, and instead of abiding by it they simplv wont out on strike. Mr MacGregor said the defendants had been engaged in tho production of yarn. and the direct lose to the employers oVin"to non-production was £5000. The working of fcho other departments of the mill was alfo interfered with to some extent. Tho Magistrate said that the lowest ponnltv ho could inflict on these workorc was £2 each with costs (6s) in each caso.
