p. According to a Press Association message tho appointment of Mr T. E. Maunsell to be a stipendiary magistrate at Westport is gazetted. A Press Association cable message from London announces tho death of Sir Edward Hopkinson Holrjen, chairman of the London City and Midland Bank, at the ago of 71 years. Dr Rutherford Waddcll, who recently resigned from the pastorate of St. Andrew's Church, left for the north by the Mokoia yesterday afternoon. 'Dr Waddell intends to spend a fortnight in Helensville and about a month in Tauranga before returniti" , to Dunedin. Mr A. F. Cheyno (Mosgiel) has received word that his son is returning by the troopship Ulimaroii. arriving at- Auckland about August 6. Trooper Cheyne left with the 29th Mounteds, and has , been all the time 'in Egypt and Palestine. ColoneJ J. Cowie Nich'olls, who has held the position of officer commanding the Otago Military District during the war period, relinquished his duties on Wednesday last. Colonel Macdonald. his successor, who is well known in Otago as officer commanding the Otago Infantry Battalion of the Main Body, has arrived and assumed his new duties. Mr G. W. W. B. Hughes, who for 10A years hae been general secretary of the Dunedin Y.M.C.A., has taken a position on the national staff of tho Y.M.C.'A. Ho is boinjr followed- by Mr V. T. Draw, who for two years has been acting- secretary in Dunedin. Mr Drew lias had 13 years' experience as a Y.M.C.A. secretary in Adelaide. Melbourne. Bcmligo. Ballarat, and Wellington, and three years' American experience in Baltimore and Now York.
