THE TAX ON WOMEN

->e». APPARENTLY A MISUNDERSTANDING. (Peb United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 24. The shipping authorities in Auckland have not received any information regarding reported liability on tho part of women entering Groat Britain to pay a tax of £40. It is suggested that tho report is incorrect, and that the misunderstanding lias arisen- in regard to the increase in pa£ singer steamer farce rnado about 12 months ago by tho British Shipping Controller First and second class farce were then advanced by £40 and the third class by £20. About two months ago a reduction of £20 was mado in tho first end second class fares. DISCUSSION IN CANTERBURY. (Pan United Pbess Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 24. At a meeting of tho Canterbury Repatriation Board, tho following telegr-im from Mr J. D. Gray (secretary to tho Ministerial Repatriation lioard) was read: "The Wellington papers have a Press Association rnossago stating that a caso cf hardship has arisen owing to a. soldier's widow desiring to retain to England, and heintx unable to impose a £40 tax imposed by tho Imperial _ Government on women entering the British Isles. This statement rs not understood. So far as the Government knows no such tax is payaWe. Nobody lias ever heard of it before, and the suggestion appears to bo a hoax. As a matter of fact, the latest advico received from the High Commissioner is that tho Imperial Ministry of Shipping had agreed in certain specified cases of hardship to transport soldiers' "widows desiring to return from New Zealand to England at troop rates." Tho Chairman (Mr A. "W. Jamicson) said tho board reoeived its information from a reliable source, and ho did not think that they -were tho victims of a hoax. Tho matter was referred to tho Sfistenaoco for further consideration.
