CONCERT AT GREEN ISLAND
The Green Island Hall was comfortably filled last night, when a concert was given by the members of the Silver Band of the Dunedin Salvation Army. Mr Lindsay Miller (Mayor), who presided, stated that some years ago the Salvation Army had endeavoured unsuccessfully to gjst established at Green Island, but now that they "were "established ho was sure they would receive the support and practical sympathy of the residents. Tho fix>aker briefly outlined the history of the Salvation Army, stating that it had its origin in East London in 1865, under the namo of the Christian Mission, with Mr William Booth at the head. In 1878 the name was altered to tbe Salvation Army, General Booth being appointed Commander-in-Ohref. The Army catered for tho masses and not for the classes, and it was doing a noble work.—(Applause.) Mr Miller then introduced Captain Maud Carmichael and Lieutenant Hutchings, under whose direction the work of the Salvation Army at (.Treen Island will be carried on. Major Gunn, with a few appropriate remarks; presented the Army's colours to Contain Carmichael.
. Th u ° programme was largely instrumental in character, ana proved thoroughly enjoyable to tho audience, whose applause of the various items was wholehearted. The prorcccls of the entertainment will bo utilised in furnish in ff tho Army's headquarters at Green Island.
