TOMATO JUICE RECIPE FOR "DRY" U.S.

NEW YORK, May 28. Hie approach of national prohibition is heralded in the United States Patent Office by a remarkable increase in applications for patents for devioss obviously intended for tho private manufacture of alcoholic beverages. Stills by tho score aro being invented, and with them the Patent Office is receiving formulas for 100 new patent medicines, tho essences of fruit products from which alcohol may be distilled, and tonics properly medicated according to recognised standards, but containing percentages of alcohol, opium, and other drugs. Tho uniform feature of the innumerable temperance drinks for which patents are demanded is their susceptibility to "proper treatment" in private stills. Tho most popular apparatus employed in this connection is on© which requires no technical knowledge. It may bo packed into an ordinary travelling trunic, and ferments and distils either malt, or spirituous beverages. " Whisky " and " rum" are now being widely made from tomato juice, moljissss, yeast and water, fermented in barrels from six to nine days, and then distilled. One formula calls for 3 gallons of molasses, 1 of yeast, 38 of tomato juice, and 50 of water. The favourite gin formula, is nsash made of malted barley and rye, yeast, water, juniper berries, salts and "lions.
