THE RAILWAY RESTRICTIONS
EFFECT ON THE PRODUCE MARKET.

WANGANUI, July 23 A Gisbome visitor to Wanganui states that the restrictions on tho train service were upsetting business to a very great extent in Poverty Bay, particularly in regard to tho importation of producc from tho South Island. Wheat, lie said, was not aftected to the same extent, as it was in storo at coastal towns. The flour, bran, and pollard supplies were not touched by 1 Gstnctions, <is tlicy eilso wers 3.imost entirely to be obtained from shipping ports Potatoes and oats, which hud to be brought from inland to be shipped, were not being delivered at the shipping ports in sufficient quantities. As an instance of the effect of the restrictions one importer said that lie had received a telegram stating tj.it his order for half a truck load of potatoes inland from Tinwru could not be supplied as the railways would carry only a full truck load. Tho effect was to! harden pricos Potatoes had increased £2 per ton m price in the South Island during tho last fortnight, of which increase £1 had taken place in the last four days. Two or three, southern firms had stated that they were unable to quote, as they could not undertake to get potatoes and oats to the seaports for shipment.
