D.J.C. SPRING MEETING. The second day of tlic Dunedin Jockey Club's spring meeting was held at Wingatiu on Saturday, when there was a fair attendance of the public outside the enclosure, but only a moderate number inside. The track was much firmer than it was last Wednesday, and the racing proved more interesting. In the Hurdle Race Vanquish took command at the far turn, and holding his place, won by three lengths. Earl fell at the second last fence, and 'his rider sustained a fractured collarbone. In the Telegraph Welter Glcnelg put in a run in the straight, and his rider endeavoured to get through on the inside, but he was shut out, and Ayrdale just managed to stall off Beauclere. Although the field was small in the Ranfurly Handicap there was an interesting race, and a splendid finish between Pampero and Wclbeck. Approaching the distance post Pampero, who had been lying last up to that stage, went through and closed on Welbeck, and, in a punishing finish home, boat the colt by short neck. Both horses appeared tired jm. the finish and were rolling a trifle. Many thought that Pamnero had "bored" Welbeck, but it was probably only what is witnessed in a close finish when both horses are tired. On returning to scale Pampero was greeted with a counter-demonstration to that given to Welbeck. In the Trial Handicap Regulation a.nd Sarchedon had carried on the running in company for the first five furlongs, when Regulation faded away to nothing, and Barbette, who hafl been lying a good distance away from the leaders, put in a very good run, and although Sarchedon's rider kept at him with the whip, the fillv beat him bv three lengths. In the Shorts Handicap Red Gauntlet and Goldspur were first to show out, but after going three furlongs Goldspur was beaten. Red Gauntlet continued to lead, and on passing the distnnce was followed by Beauclere, with Vladimir close behind. A little later the whip was drawn on Red Gauntlet, and Vladimir shot through on the rails, »ind in a good finish home beat Donna Rosa for first place. Beauclere just succeeding in taking third position from Red Gauntlet. The race was run in a gale of ■wind, which may account for the time reading slow. Mosca. had the lead in the Second Hack Handican until the turn into the straight, when Sarchedon went up. Regulation put in a good run, but Bwerved badly at the finish, and was defeated by Sarchedon. The Farewell Handicap proved a soft thing for Glenelg. He caught Whirlwind and Wild West turning' into the straight, and won easily by a short length. Ardnarff, who had been lying Inst throughout, put in a run at the finish and came third. In the Shorts Handicap Vladimir ran more kindly than he did in the Welter on the first day, when he was beaten by Glenelg. _ The weather was close, though fine- during the greater part of the afternoon, but about 3.30 a heavy gale of wind came un, and was followed shortly after by rain. The creature comforts of those present we>re attended to by Mrs BeaAson, who did the catering, and there was nothing to complain of in this direction. There was a slight falling off in the tofcalifsator investments compared with the second day of the spring meetine last year, the figures being respectively £34-68 and £+001 10s. The investments for the two days this year amounted to £6499 10s, and for the corresponding days of last year to £8147. , The officials of the club were, as usual, attentive to their duties, which they performed •with entire satisfaction.
