CRICKET.

The Albion Club held two good practices on. the North Ground on Saturday, some 60 members taking part in tho games. A match First Fourteen v. Rest of the Club (22) was started, but liad to be abandoned on account of the rain. Taking advantage of/the cessation of play, the members assembled in the pavilion while one of their number presented Mr Maitland, the president of tlie club, with a framed photograph of the Albion team, which won the Third-class Championship last season, also with the Third-class Championship Shield, which be was desired to hold for the season, or until such time as it should be wrested from them.

The Privateers Cricket Club opened the season on Saturday last with a match President v. Vice-president. Tlie President's side winning the toss elected to bat on a perfcot wicket. The score totalled 85 for two wickets when stumps had' to be drawn, for the day on account of the rain. Practice will commence this evening at 5 o'clock, and as many members aa possible are requested to attend.

The Port Chalmers Cricket Club formally opened the season on Saturday with a match President v. Vice-president, when there was an excellent attendance of members and their friends, who evidently take a keen interest in the game in Port. The rain which caime on spoiled, to a certain extent, the enjoyment of the afternoon, but, nevertheless, a good game resulted, several players on both sides showing good form with both bat and ball. Between the innings Mr E. G. Allen, M.H.R. (president of the club), declared the season opened, and congratulated the elub on its elevation to senior rank, also on the great improvements to the pavilion and grounds. The members and their friends were the guests of Mrs Waters, who supplied refreshments during the afternoon, which were much appreciated by all those present. A Christolvurch telegram states that the Senior Cup cricket matches opened -»n Saturday. In the Midland v. United match the former made 212 in their first innings (Strange 46, Bromley 42). The United has made 11 for no wicket?. In the match Lancaster Park v. Sydenham, the former scored 216 (A. E. Ridley 50, Callaway 49). Sydenham has made 44 for eight wickets.
